About the Eight Is Enough Cast Then and Now
The Eight Is Enough cast then and now tells the story of a TV family that felt like a real one to millions of American households. The ABC series premiered on March 15, 1977, and ran for five seasons and 112 episodes, ending on May 23, 1981.
The show was based on the book Eight Is Enough by Tom Braden, a newspaper columnist who really did raise eight children. On screen, he became Tom Bradford, a Sacramento newspaper columnist trying to keep a big, noisy, loving household together.
Nearly fifty years later, viewers still ask the same question: what became of the Bradfords? Some of the cast are still working, some stepped away from the spotlight, and four of the people remembered in this episode have passed away.
Where Is the Eight Is Enough Cast Now?
Dick Van Patten as Tom Bradford
Dick Van Patten had been performing almost his whole life before he became Tom Bradford. He made his Broadway debut at age seven, and from 1949 to 1957 he played Nels Hansen on the early TV series Mama. When he was drafted into the Army in 1949, a young James Dean briefly filled in for him.
As the warm, patient father of eight, he became one of television's most familiar dads. His kindness reached beyond the script, too. In 1991, when his TV son Adam Rich was arrested, it was Van Patten who paid his bail.
Dick Van Patten died on June 23, 2015, at the age of 86, of complications from diabetes.
Diana Hyland as Joan Bradford
Diana Hyland was the show's first mother, Joan Bradford. She already had a long career behind her, including the Broadway premiere of Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth with Paul Newman, the 1966 film The Chase with Marlon Brando, and a run on Peyton Place.
She had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1975 and continued to work through treatment. She filmed only four episodes. She died on March 27, 1977, at age 41, just days after the series premiered. The show later wrote Joan's passing into the story.
That fall, she was honored with a posthumous Emmy for The Boy in the Plastic Bubble, the TV movie where she played the mother of John Travolta's character. Travolta, her partner at the time, accepted the award for her.
Betty Buckley as Abby Bradford
Stepping into a role after a real loss is never easy, but Betty Buckley did it with grace. Starting in season two, she played Abby, the widowed teacher who became Tom's wife and a new mother to the Bradford children.
After the show, Broadway made her a legend. She won the 1983 Tony Award for playing Grizabella in Cats, the character who sings "Memory." She later played Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard in London and New York, and earned another Tony nomination for Triumph of Love in 1997.
Betty Buckley is 79 and still working, with recent film roles including Eternity in 2025.
Grant Goodeve as David Bradford
David, the oldest son, was played by Mark Hamill in the 1976 pilot. When the series went forward, Grant Goodeve took over the role. Starting in season three, he also sang the show's theme song.
In 1989 he moved to the Pacific Northwest. Beginning in the late 1990s, he hosted the travel show Northwest Backroads on Seattle's KING-TV for many years.
Grant Goodeve is 74 and the father of three children.
Lani O'Grady as Mary Bradford
Lani O'Grady played Mary, the oldest Bradford daughter, in all five seasons and returned for the reunion movies in 1987 and 1989. Show business ran in her family. Her mother was a children's talent agent, and her brother was actor and musician Don Grady of My Three Sons.
In a 1994 interview with the Los Angeles Times, she spoke openly about living with panic attacks since age 18 and being diagnosed with panic disorder at 21. In the early 1990s she stepped away from acting and worked as a talent agent.
Lani O'Grady died at her home in Valencia, California, on September 25, 2001, a week before what would have been her 47th birthday. The coroner listed multiple-drug intoxication and could not determine whether the death was accidental.
Laurie Walters as Joanie Bradford
Laurie Walters played Joanie, the second-oldest daughter, who dreamed of an acting career. Before the series, she appeared in the 1973 horror film Warlock Moon.
She has not acted on television since 1993. She turned her energy toward the environment, coordinating volunteers for the Los Angeles tree-planting group TreePeople. She later settled in Ojai, California, where she has acted in and directed local theater under the name Laurie Walters Slade. Her husband, John Slade, died in 2017.
Susan Richardson as Susan Bradford
Susan Richardson played Susan, the fourth Bradford child. When she became pregnant in real life, the pregnancy was written into the show, and her daughter Sarah was born in 1980.
In later years she spoke candidly about hard times. She said pressure to lose weight after the baby led her to use cocaine, and a 2013 interview described serious health problems, including diabetes and several small strokes, while she lived modestly near her Pennsylvania hometown.
Dianne Kay as Nancy Bradford
Nancy was played by Kimberly Beck in the pilot, but ABC recast the part with Dianne Kay for the series. She appeared in nearly every episode.
Her last listed screen appearance was a 1999 episode of Diagnosis: Murder. Now 72 and retired, she has kept her life private.
Connie Needham as Elizabeth Bradford
Connie Needham played Elizabeth, the youngest daughter. She was credited as Connie Newton until season four. In 1979 she married David Needham, a set designer on the show.
A trained dancer, she guest-starred on Fame in 1982 and later taught jazz and lyrical dance to young students in Orange County, California. In 2009 she announced she had ovarian cancer, and she has since made a full recovery. She is 66.
Willie Aames as Tommy Bradford
Willie Aames played Tommy, the lively middle son, while also fronting his own rock band. After the show, he co-starred as Buddy Lembeck on Charles in Charge from 1984 to 1990 and played the title role in the Christian video series Bibleman.
He has been open about his struggles with alcohol and money, including a difficult stretch around 2009. He rebuilt his life working as a cruise director, then returned to acting in 2016, including several Hallmark movies. Now 66, he paid tribute to Adam Rich in 2023, calling him his "only little brother."
Adam Rich as Nicholas Bradford
Adam Rich was only eight when he became Nicholas, the youngest Bradford, and his famous haircut earned him the nickname "America's little brother."
Growing up in the spotlight was not easy for him. He struggled with addiction for years and went through several stays in rehab. In October 2022, he shared that he had been sober for seven years and encouraged his followers never to give up.
Adam Rich died at his Los Angeles home on January 7, 2023, at age 54. The medical examiner later ruled his death accidental, caused by fentanyl.
Ralph Macchio as Jeremy Andretti
In the final season, a young Ralph Macchio joined the cast as Jeremy Andretti, Abby's orphaned nephew, appearing in 19 episodes from 1980 to 1981.
Three years later, The Karate Kid (1984) made him a star. He returned to that role in the series Cobra Kai, which ran from 2018 to 2025, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in November 2024. He is 64.
Why Eight Is Enough Still Means So Much to Viewers
Eight Is Enough was more than a sitcom with a big cast. It showed a family facing real loss, a father raising children alone, and a new marriage built on patience.
The bonds also carried off the set. Dick Van Patten helped his TV son in a hard moment, and Willie Aames still called Adam Rich his little brother more than forty years later. Those small acts are part of why fans remember this family so fondly.
